In this video, Hany Rambod stresses the importance of going slightly past the obliques to increase the range of motion.  Typically for barbell rows the range of motion is limited as you pull into the stomach area, but using dumbbells The Pro Creator recommends you twist the wrist a bit and pull the dumbbell up further.

Don't forget the importance of time under tension. Time under tension is critical as anyone can jerk the weight through the concentric part of the rep, but controlling it slowly up and then controlling it through the eccentric part of the rep will help add thickness and width to your back.
